Apulia - Discover paradise in the south of Italy: a trip through the region with my itinerary

Updated: Jan 3

Italy is a country full of stunning regions, but one that is often overlooked is Apulia. This enchanting region, stretching to the south of the Italian peninsula, is a true paradise for travelers seeking authentic experiences. From picturesque coastal towns to historic towns and a culinary tradition that enchants the senses, Apulia has it all.

The natural beauty of Apulia

One of the first things that impress visitors about Apulia is its breathtaking landscapes. The Adriatic coast stretches along the eastern side of the region and the Ionian coast stretches along the western side. Here you will find untouched beaches with crystal clear water that invite you to swim and relax.

The highlight of nature in Apulia, however, are the trulli. These unique, cone-shaped stone structures are typical of the region and have even been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They can be found in towns like Alberobello and give the landscape a fairytale atmosphere.

Historical Treasures

Apulia is rich in history and culture. In the city of Lecce you can admire Baroque architecture, called "the Florence of the South". Matera, a city in the neighboring region of Basilicata, is also worth a visit. Here you will find the famous Sassi cave dwellings, carved into the rock and a fascinating example of ancient settlements.

For history lovers, the city of Bari offers historical sites such as the Basilica of San Nicola and Castello Svevo, a medieval castle. Apulia also offers numerous museums and archaeological sites that provide insight into the region's rich history.

The delicacies of the region

No trip to Apulia would be complete without experiencing the culinary delights of the region. Apulia is famous for its olive oils, which are among the best in the world. You can visit local wineries and taste the region's excellent wines. Apulian cuisine is simple but delicious. Be sure to try the "orecchiette," a type of pasta often served with spicy tomato sauce and ricotta.

Fresh seafood is also a must when in Apulia. From grilled fish to seafood pasta dishes, you'll make your culinary dreams come true here.
